Diameter measurements

RODER offers a wide range of instruments for diameter measurements, both with contact technology that with contactless technology.

The diameter measurement can be achieved with both traditional ones Vernier calipers and contact micrometers or with advanced technologies such as LASER distance meters and LASER micrometers.

The complete integration of measurement technologies with the production environment and with the management system allows us to optimize the flow of information available for modern business management.

The diameter measurements can be integrated with other measurements (ovalization, oscillation or concentricity) to obtain complete control of the dimensional and geometric characteristics of the product under consideration.

Technical insight

Measuring the diameter of an object is an operation of fundamental importance in the technical and industrial fields. This parameter in fact influences a series of characteristics crucial to the quality of the product. There are several instruments used to make such measurements.

Diameter measurements with vernier calipers

Vernier calipers are very popular measuring instruments used for measuring various quantities, including diameter. A measurement is essentially made with the tip of the caliper which is slid inside the hole and the distance between the two noses of the slide is measured. The measurement therefore depends on the precision of the positioning of the tip. Vernier calipers are an economical tool with essential performance, but widely used due to their flexibility of use.

Diameter measurements with LASER distance meters

LASER distance meters are a measuring instrument that uses a LASER beam to calculate the distance between the device and the object to be measured. It is a very precise instrument and usually used for measuring large dimensions. The measurement is performed quickly and efficiently, without the need for any contact with the object. This reduces the risk of wear or errors caused by manual measurement.

Diameter measurements with contact micrometers

Contact micrometers are very precise measuring instruments that are mainly used for defining tolerances in mechanical applications. The measurement takes place thanks to a metal probe on the device which is pressed against the object to be measured with a controlled pressure. This type of measurement requires accurate positioning of the object, but guarantees high measurement precision.

Diameter measurements with LASER micrometers

LASER micrometers represent one of the best options for measuring diameters of small or complex objects. This device uses a LASER beam to measure the distance between two specific points on the object, thus providing the diameter measurement. The use of a LASER beam guarantees high precision in measurements. However, the costs of a LASER micrometer are generally very high.

Diameter measurements with bore gauges

Bore gauges are measuring instruments suitable for defining very tight tolerances. These tools are commonly used for measuring particularly precise holes or for machining to very high tolerances. The data obtained from the tool will provide the diameter of the hole with high precision.

Diameter measurements with digital comparators

Digital comparators are measuring instruments that use a linear transducer to measure changes in dimensions of an object (mainly used for measurements with comparison). A contact point is used between the instrument and the object that is to be measured. They guarantee high precision in measurements, but are more complex to manage than other instruments, especially if the dimensions refer to objects with complex geometries. They are not suitable for measuring complex or three-dimensional objects.

Diameter measurements with archimeters

Archimeters are one of the measuring instruments that are very simple to use. These instruments allow the measurement of radii and diameters even of only portions of objects (for example profiles or arches). Archimeters are mainly used in the sector of bending pipes, profiles or sheets. The measurement is carried out using the principle of measuring the circle that passes through three points.
