Humidity measurements

Humidity measurements are of fundamental importance in the industrial sector. In fact, the humidity present in the working environment can have a significant impact on the quality of products, the safety of workers and the efficiency of production processes.

Humidity measurement can be carried out with sensors and measuring instruments specially designed for measuring humidity and/or temperature for determination of the dew point.

Un humidity meter (also called thermohygrometer or hygrometer) measures the humidity of the air or the equilibrium humidity of the material in a safe, fast and precise way.

Typical applications of humidity measurements in the industrial sector include the production of pharmaceutical, food, textile and paper products, as well as the management of environmental conditions in HVAC systems. Furthermore, humidity measurements are also used for prevention of corrosion in piping systems and in the conservation of historical and artistic artefacts in museums and archives.

The advantages of using measuring instruments for humidity measurement are many. Thanks to precise measurements, it is possible to control and guarantee the quality of products and prevent damage due to excessive humidity.

Additionally, humidity measures can help maintain a healthy and safe working environment for workers, helping to prevent respiratory illnesses and skin irritation. Additionally, humidity measurement data can help improve the efficiency of manufacturing processes, for example in the production of materials such as paper, where humidity can impact production speed.

Technical insight

Humidity is a fundamental parameter to measure in many environments: from the laboratory to industries, from production processes to storage warehouses. A correct evaluation of humidity can in fact prevent damage to structures and objects, prevent the proliferation of mold and bacteria, and safeguard people's health.

Speaking of humidity measurements, there are mainly two types of instruments: portable ones and bench-top ones.

Humidity measurements with portable instruments are very useful when the measurement must be carried out in a specific area or over time in different positions. Examples of instruments of this type are thermohygrometers, hygrothermographs, humidity sensors to be read in analogue and digital meters. These devices are equipped with highly sensitive sensors and can detect humidity with great precision.

On the contrary, humidity measurements with benchtop instruments are recommended when the measurement must be carried out continuously, with high connectivity, and in any case they are used in laboratories and production environments. Benchtop instruments measure humidity using a humidity sensor and are very accurate in providing reliable data over time. They can be used to control an entire area, such as a laboratory or room.
