Position measurements

In the industrial sector, position measurements are essential to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of multiple processes.

These measurements allow you to determine the exact position of an object in relation to a reference point and to carry out dimensional checks in real time.

Typical applications of position measurements are many, including the production of industrial machinery, metalworking, the manufacture of mechanical parts, the assembly of electronic components, the production of tools, carpentry and woodworking.

The use of measuring instruments for position measurement offers numerous advantages, including one greater precision of industrial operations and a reduction in processing times. Accurate and rapid results allow industry professionals to evaluate the quality level of their products, prevent any production problems and maximize company productivity.

Technical insight

In industrial and manufacturing fields, position measurement is a fundamental operation to ensure the correct functioning of various applications. Using specific tools it is possible to obtain precise and accurate information on the movement of moving parts or on the dimensional variations of elements during processing. In particular, there are three main categories of instruments for position measurement: contact micrometers, digital comparators and LVDT linear transducers.

Position measurements with contact micrometers

Contact micrometers are mechanical instruments that use a calibrated screw and graduated drum to make precise linear displacement measurements. Thanks to a small contact lever, it is possible to exert light pressure on the surface to be measured and thus obtain a precise alignment value. They are commonly used to make reference measurements, or to check the actual tolerance value on complex mechanical components.

Position measurements with digital comparators

Digital comparators are electronic instruments that use a graduated scale, or an electronic controller, and a system of sensors to measure the position of moving elements. Thanks to a bright display, measurement results can be displayed precisely and quickly. These instruments are particularly suitable for analyzing complex objects that require precise and accurate measurements, such as small and medium-sized mechanical components.

Position measurements with LVDT linear transducers

Finally, LVDT linear transducers are electromechanical instruments that allow obtaining a very precise measurement of the position of moving objects. Due to their high sensitivity, they are particularly useful in precision applications, such as precision control on CNC machinery.
