RFID traceability of waste paper bales

RFID warehouse for waste paper bales

RODER launches an innovative project based on RFID technology for digital tracking in the paper recycling supply chain, covering the section currently uncovered and guaranteeing complete traceability, from recovery to the paper mill, promoting sustainability and new certification opportunities.

In a business ecosystem where sustainability and operational efficiency become imperatives, technological innovation in the field of traceability of recycling supply chains emerges as a key element in the paper sector.

The advent of recent regulations underlines the importance of advanced systems for the digital surveillance of processes, especially in the phase concerning the separate collection and subsequent recovery of paper and cardboard.

In this context, RODER SRL responds to the growing tracking needs of the entire supply chain with a pioneering project, currently in the operational testing phase, which uses RFID technology for the unique and widespread monitoring of raw materials along each production stage.

Through the use of RFID tags, a founding element of this technology, it is possible to mark each bale of material with information relevant for tracking, which go beyond the limits of current procedures.

The use of RFID technologies allows the creation of virtual warehouses where all Materials can be monitored remotely (with mobile phone, tablet or PC) and can be classified based on the type of material, weight and size.

Traceability of Recycling Supply Chains: the Technological Value of RFID

RFID tags, consisting of a microchip and an antenna, are customizable based on operational needs.

Their versatility allows them to be adapted to any shape and to opt for different functions such as reading and/or writing data (Read/Write), as well as selecting the range based on the frequencies (LF, HF and UHF).

These identification devices work in synergy with other essential components of the RFID device, such as antennas, controllers, computers and cloud, to ensure immediate and secure data exchange.

The futuristic project developed by RODER SRL is structured around a innovative platform connected to the 4G network.

This platform is not limited to recording weights, lengths and humidity, but also integrates traceability data which is transferred both to the RFID tag placed on the bale and to a dedicated cloud platform.

Easy and immediate consultation

The data of each individual bale can be consulted in the cloud (via mobile phone, tablet, notebook or PC) or can be consulted with a handheld terminal specially designed for reading TAGs on the waste paper bale and directly in the storage area.

The use of UHF Read/Write tags allows you to follow every single bale produced, from its origin in the recovery plant to its arrival at the end customer, ensuring complete and uninterrupted traceability. In order for tags to be operational, they must be pre-registered in a database.

Registration feeds the system capable of automatically associating the detections with the corresponding tag and uploading the information both on the label and on the web portal. The latter therefore becomes a fundamental tool for the creation of virtual warehouses related to the various recipients.

The loading and unloading processes in the warehouse have also improved thanks to the introduction of "RFID gates", connected to the 4G network, which identify and record material releases in real time.

This innovative mechanism allows detailed formation of loads, highlighting the number of bales and related weight, supporting the creation of a data log to attach to the transport document.

The implementation of this technology not only fills the information gap in the central link of the paper supply chain, but is projected into the creation of new opportunities such as extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs, product certifications and improvement of sustainability indices.

In conclusion, RFID technology marks a decisive turning point in the sector of product traceability in paper recycling, outlining a future scenario in which efficiency and operational transparency are best combined with environmental sustainability objectives.
